Eskom upgrades loadshedding to Stage 4 as it suffers breakage at Koeberg

This morning we reported that Eskom would be upgrading loadshedding from Stage 1 earlier in the week to Stage 2. Now the power utility has had to upgrade the intensity of loadshedding to Stage 4, which is the highest Stage that the country has experienced to date.

The power utility had to confirm the upgrade fairly quickly, tweeting out that Stage 4 would start at 14:00 today, leaving people and business in the country with less than 10 minutes to adequately prepare.

The reason for the escalation is the power utility’s Koeberg Unit 1 station tripping. Eskom adds that the station has been removed from the grid while technicians work on repairing a fault to the turbine on site.

The precise reason for the fault is unknown at this stage, but this most recent escalation shows just how quickly the situation can change, along with the kind of strain our power grid is under.

At the time of writing there is no precise downgrade or return to a lower stage being mentioned by Eskom, so we’ll have to wait for updates from the power utility in the interim.

As such we’re advising our readers to charge all essential hardware if they are currently not under the loadshedding schedule, and make use of the EskomSePush app to stay up to date.

This may very well be the state of existence for South Africans moving forward, as Eskom noted that this rotational loadshedding is expected to continue until July of 2021 at least.
