Meet the AOC AG493UCX – Why go ultra-wide when you can go super ultra-wide

We’ve been shopping around for a new gaming monitor for some time now and our indecisiveness regarding making a purchase may have been a good thing for the first time ever.

We say that because Rectron now stocks AOC gaming monitors and the freshest arrival is the AG493UCX 49inch monitor.

Yes, you read that correctly, the AG493UCX clocks in at a gargantuan 49inches. It’s like having two QHD displays side-by-side but without that annoying bezel taking up real-estate in the centre of the panels.

The AG493UCX isn’t just like having a QHD display, it actually has a native resolution of 5120x1440p. The width of the display is of course longer than most hence the 5120 figure but the curved design means the AG493UCX wraps around you so you don’t need to move your head too much.

This is of course rather important for games but so is refresh rate.

A higher refresh rate translates into a smoother visual experience (provided you have the PC to enable that) and the AG493UCX boasts a refresh rate of 120Hz. In addition to this, the AG493UCX supports the AMD FreeSync Premium Pro standard.

That means you will be guaranteed at least a 120Hz refresh rate, highly accurate luminance and wide colour gamut thanks to AMD’s testing. All of this translates into a stunning visual experience for supported games.

Speaking of games, the 32:9 aspect ratio is perfect for racing games. So much so that TGN Racing Simulators has selected AOC as its monitor sponsor for 2020.

Owner of TGN Racing Simulators, Werner Joubert, has actually been using the AG493UCX for some time now and has lauded the monitor for its stellar performance.

The owner tested Assetto Corsa, Assetto Corsa Competizione, Forza 7, Project Cars 2, F1 2019 and Dirt 2.0 and found all of the games reached frame rates of 100FPS at Ultra or Very High presets.

“After a few days of testing on our TGN Racing Simulator Rigs this is becoming our favourite screen making life so much easier with the Super Ultra Wide aspect ratio. There’s no need to do triple screen setups and struggle with multiple cables and having those annoying bezels between the screens,” says Joubert.

For mounting the AG493UCX there is a VESA 100×100 mount but Joubert says the monitor was easy to mount to TGN’s rigs, even though they have a custom solution. That is pretty valuable if you intend on using the AG493UCX for a multi-monitor setup.

You’ll find a bevy of ports below the display including two HDMI 2.0 ports and two DisplayPort 1.4 ports which you’ll need to hit that 120Hz. You’ll also find a 3.5mm headphone out port and three USB 3.2 ports.

There are also two 5W speakers inside the monitor.
