SweepSouth working to prepare its domestic workers for coronavirus

By now the fact that there are confirmed local cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) should be well known. As a result South African companies are taking steps to safeguard their employees and customers alike, and cleaning service startup SweepSouth is no different.

To that end the firm has circulated some information as to how it is preparing the domestic workers (or SweepStars as they term them) for the potential spread of COVID-19 locally.

SweepSouth explains that it is sharing notifications with domestic workers as to the symptoms to look out for, what actions need to be taken if they, or anyone else they encounter are feeling ill.

“In light of how rapidly COVID-19 has spread in other countries following the announcement of their first cases, we want to make sure that our SweepStars are following the advice guidelines set up by the national department of health and the World Health Organisation (WHO),” says Aisha Pandor, CEO and co-founder of SweepSouth.

“As we are in constant communication with our SweepStars, we have used our communications platforms to pass along these messages as many of them may not be aware of the various websites set up with this information,” she adds.

The startup is also showing its domestic workers how to best handle the cleaning of areas to best prevent the spread of COVID-19, with the firm updated its training in this regard.

It has also acknowledged that hand sanitising products are highly sought after at the moment and difficult to find, so SweepSouth is sharing tutorials on how to make homemade versions.

“As the need for cleaning services become more prevalent in light of the current situation, we wanted to proactively confirm that our SweepStars are aware of how they can ensure a home or office is properly cleaned in light of coronavirus. More than anything, this has simply meant reminding SweepStars to follow the tenets of basic hygiene which health officials say remain effective and important to follow,” Pandor concludes.

While it is indeed commendable to see SweepSouth take steps to better prepare its domestic workers, it will be interesting to know what the implications are should a SweepStar contract COVID-19 as a result of working at a tenant.

We’ve asked the startup regarding this, and will share its feedback.
