Destiny 2’s Trials of Osiris details – Rewards, Passages and The Lighthouse

Today is an important one for Bungie and an exciting one for Destiny 2 players – Trials of Osiris returns.

This pinnacle Player versus Player (PvP) activity is as storied as the lore of Destiny and after what feels like a full year of begging from the community, Trials returns this evening at 19:00 CAT.

So what is Trials of Osiris and why is the community so hyped up about it?

Introduced in Destiny, Trials (as it is affectionately known by the community) is a sweat fest that pushes players to perform their best when facing other players.

The game-mode sees two teams of three compete against each other. The goal is to earn seven wins without dropping a game and for your efforts, loot will rain down upon you.

Things are a bit different this time around so let’s dive into those differences ahead of Trials’ release later today.

Passages not Boon

Before getting into Trials you will need to visit pigeon-loving crayon-eater Saint-14 at the Tower. You will need to purchase a Passage from the Titan in order to compete in Trials.

Each Passage has a unique perk which we’ve outlined below.

  • Mercy Passage – Forgives one loss per run
  • Ferocity Passage – With zero losses, your third win grants a bonus win
  • Confidence Passage – Grants a bonus reward from the Flawless chest
  • Wealth Passage – Increased Trials tokens from completing and winning Trials matches
  • Wisdom Passage – Grants bonus XP from Trials wins, scaling with the number of wins on the Passage

Players will only be able to have one Passage active at a time but new ones can be purchased to replace your existing Passage. While the goal of Trials is to get seven wins and zero losses, you are able to lose twice with a third loss locking the Passage and requiring a reset or purchasing a different one.

In order to acquire the gorgeous gear above, you will need to win at least three times.

The rewards are as follows:

  • 3 wins – Powerful Gear (Tier II)
  • 5 wins – Powerful Gear (Tier III)
  • 7 wins – Pinnacle Gear

You can find a full list of Trials gear over at Light.gg if you’d like to shop for your “god roll” ahead of time.

To sum up then. Buy a Passage from Saint-14, head into Trials, get seven wins. Alternatively, lose three times and reset your Passage or purchase a new one. The only way to enter The Lighthouse is to go Flawless i.e. seven wins, zero losses.

There will also be weekly, daily and additional bounties which can be completed for Trials tokens, Valor rank points, XP and Glimmer.

Trials tokens can be redeemed at Saint-14 to increase reputation and earn Trials Engrams. These engrams will contain a piece of Trials gear. Bungie has said that Trials Tokens not spent at the end of the week will be removed.

Players who go Flawless will receive a yellow glow on their armour which will fade between Tuesday and Friday. In order to get the glow again, a player will have to go Flawless again the next weekend.

Those players will also receive two emblems. When the Light for the Lost emblem is equipped, Trials gear will glow white to signify that player is helping other players get to the Lighthouse. The Flawless Empyrean emblem will glow red and signify that player is trying to stop players from reaching the Lighthouse.

Form a team

There is one final thing we ought to mention. Players will need pre-made fireteams in order to compete in Trials of Osiris.

While Trials of Osiris is free to play and available to all players, you will need to be at least 960 Power in order to compete and even then, that’s not advised.

We say this because like Iron Banner, Trials of Osiris will have power enabled. This means that if a Guardian is a higher power than you, they will wipe the floor with the rags of your armour.

It’s at this point we’d urge players to check out LFG (looking for group) sites.

The Bungie forum itself is a fantastic place to find others looking to play Trials and while we haven’t tested it ourselves the r/DestinyTheGame sub-Reddit’s Discord server is well populated with many folks looking to play.

Failing those, hop onto Twitch and see if any smaller streamers are carrying viewers to the Lighthouse. Pop them a sub while you’re at it.

The final thing that needs mentioning is the fact that Trials is a weekend event only. That means the event starts every Friday and ends every Tuesday at weekly reset.

Best of luck and see you at The Lighthouse.
