Control’s new expansion The Foundation is out 26th March

In 2019 we got the absolutely superb Control and now, in 2020, we’re getting even more of it in an expansion called “The Foundation”.

“In The Foundation, the Astral Plane is colliding with our reality. Jesse Faden, the Director of the Federal Bureau of Control, must travel through the caverns of the Foundation to prevent the Astral Plane from consuming the Oldest House. The missing Head of Operations, Helen Marshall, may hold some answers to the mysteries surrounding this threat. As she travels deeper, Jesse will learn more about Marshall’s disappearance, and about the enigmatic Board,” writes Antonela Pounder, senior brand community manager at developer 505 Games.

The titular Foundation is a new level in the game which can only be accessed after completing the main game, which says to us that this will very much be a true continuation of the game instead of some tacked on additions to fill the time.

In this new area players will be taking on new challenges such as an enemy called the Hiss Sharpened which has been revealed to attack with a pickaxe. This choice of weapon seems to imply that the Sharpened were some kind of worker or miner before being taken over by the Hiss.

To fight the Sharpened and the take on the problems in this expansion Jesse will be getting new tools too. It has been revealed that she will be getting two new abilities and one new upgrade to the Service Weapon.

The abilities are called Shape and Shield Rush, and allow Jesse to alter the environment and upgrade the Shield ability respectively. The new Service Weapon form is called Fracture and is also focused on deforming the environment like Shape does. You can see glimpses of these in the short 60 second trailer embedded below.

Four to five hours of playtime have been promised for The Foundation, which is included with the season pass for the game and will need to be purchased for those without it.

That 26th March release date, unfortunately, only applies to PlayStation 4 and PC (through the Epic Games Store). Those on Xbox One will need to wait until 25th June to experience the expansion, which is a rather long wait.

A free update is launching in March too. “In response to player feedback, we’ve improved the functionality of the map, added the option to reallocate Ability points using Essence at Control points, and other quality of life improvements. There’s also the Shield Rush ability upgrade and many more improvements under the hood,” Pounder concludes.
