Department of Health launched a COVID-19 website at the weekend

President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak a national disaster. As such more South Africans are searching online for as much information as possible, with the number of confirmed cases in the country currently sitting at 61, and expected to grow.

Also at the weekend, the Department of Health launched a website and WhatsApp group for people to stay up to date as to what the government department has been tracking with regard for COVID-19.

While both solutions are welcome, we’re particularly interested in the website, especially as it will be the primary method by which the information is disseminated to the country. The information should also be more accurate than what is shared via social media by everyday South Africans, which is often plagued with opinion rather than fact.

Along with offering a portal of the latest press releases from the Department, there are also live statistics for South Africa, including the number tests that have been performed, positive cases identified and the number of deaths, which sits at zero at the time of writing.

There’s also health tips for ways to prevent the spread of the virus, along with studies regarding the precise biology of COVID-19 itself.

If there is going to be one online resource to use during the foreseeable future when tracking the spread of COVID-19 in South Africa, it would have to be this.
