Microsoft provides hard numbers for the Xbox Series X

Ever since we learned that the new generation of Xbox would be the Series X, we’ve been patiently waiting to find out what would be inside the odd new chassis. Microsoft revealed a few vague details back in February, but now we have solid numbers and specs for what hardware is inside this new console.

The full spec list can be found in the table below, but we can pick apart some of the important stuff.

The CPU and GPU combo here from AMD is aimed at providing 4K at 60FPS and up to 120 FPS on either very optimised titles (esports games are mentioned) or gaming at a lower resolution. All of this while supporting DirectX Raytracing, which has aiming towards becoming more mainstream after NVIDIA released its RTX cards.

The other big development here is that of storage. We’ve known for a while that both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X would finally be ditching mechanical storage for SSDs, but it remained to see how it would be implemented. We can now see that, at least at launch, the Series X will ship with a one terabyte NVME SSD.

As AAA games seem to balloon in size every year, this large and fast capacity on offer is very welcome, as is the ability to expand that storage by another terabyte.

Unfortunately this comes with the fact that these SSDs and the expansion ones you can buy are a propriety design created by Seagate, which you can see in this Eurogamer article. We thought the collective gaming industry learned to avoid non-standard memory when the PS Vita flopped, but we guess not. Hopefully these units aren’t insanely expensive compared to standard ones you can buy for PCs.

Along with these specs Microsoft has also released some new images of the console including the sexy exploded view you can see above. These can be found here, and we also suggest checking out the updated dedicated site.
