Universal Pictures will release films at theaters and streaming services on the same day

With the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) spreading rapidly throughout the world, many countries have asked citizens to self-isolate so as to prevent the spread of the virus.

Staying at home obviously means not being able to watch the latest movie releases and film companies have seemingly made this connection at last.

Universal Pictures has announced that it will make a number of its newly released or yet to be released films available for rental.

The first of these new releases will be Trolls World Tour which is set to be released in theaters in the US on 10th April.

But as for right now Universal will make The Hunt, Invisible Man and Emma available on a “wide variety of the most popular on-demand services for a 48-hour rental period” at a suggested rental price of $19.99 (~R334.09).

“Rather than delaying these films or releasing them into a challenged distribution landscape, we wanted to provide an option for people to view these titles in the home that is both accessible and affordable,” NBCUniversal’s chief executive officer, Jeff Shell, said in a statement.

While NBCUniversal states that these releases will be worldwide, it didn’t provide specifics regarding where exactly these rentals will be available.

A report by Engadget states that rentals will be available through Vudu, iTunes and Amazon Video.

We will keep an eye on local distribution channels and update you when we learn more.

“We hope and believe that people will still go to the movies in theaters where available, but we understand that for people in different areas of the world that is increasingly becoming less possible,” concluded Shell.

While it’s not a new release, Warner Bros. will make Birds of Prey available for digital purchase on 24th March with rental available in April according to a report by Variety.
