MultiChoice makes more channels and content freely available to help with social distancing

Earlier this week MultiChoice made a handful of news channels free to stream via the DStv Now app in light of COVID-19 being declared a national disaster in South Africa. Now MultiChoice is expanding the number of channels it is making free, along with adding some more content to users at this time.

This as more people are spending time at home, with schools closed, remote working being encouraged and social distancing the new normal presently.

“We have been in constant communication with health authorities such as the World Health Organisation, and we will be rolling out Africa-wide public service announcements on COVID-19. It is important that all of us take heed of the announcements and advice from trusted experts so that we can look after our own health and that of our loved ones,” notes MultiChoice Group CEO Calvo Mawela.

To that end, from today (20th March) onwards MultiChoice is making its 24-hour news channels more easily accessible across the continent via the DStv Now app for subscribers and non-subscribers alike, along with adding CNN to the DStv Family and Access plans.

Along with the news channels, MultiChoice confirms that more kids shows, curated sports content and movies will be added to the mix moving forward.

“In light of the disruptions to the school year in some markets, we are also working towards providing access to the best available educational content to help keep young minds stimulated and engaged,” adds Mawela.

Revision lessons from educational channel Mindset (channel 319) will be available on Catch Up and educational channel Da Vinci (channel 318) will be made available until the end of May, the service provider explains. Nickelodeon (channel 305) has also been opened up to DStv Compact, Family and Access subscribers until 14th April, it says.

In terms of sports, more award winning and critically acclaimed sports documentaries have been introduced, with SuperSport 1 (channel 201) opened to DStv Compact Plus and Compact subscribers, as well as SuperSport 7 (channel 207) available to DStv Access customers.

On the movie side of things, Box Office is seeing its catalogue increase to 40 films, with renting costs a reduced R25 per flick.

Noting about potential changes in terms of productions, MultiChoice also points out that due care has been taken to ensure that employees, customers, production houses and suppliers also have limited risk of exposure. Consequently a number of sports, film and production crews may not be able to continue working, but customers will be updated of any programme schedules and changes in the coming days and weeks.

We are taking great care for our staff during this time and have encouraged those that are able to work from home to do so,” says Mawela.

“In light of this we have advised our customers that there may be a delay in our ability to attend to customer queries. However, we have a number of self service and online platforms available, and we will do our best to sort out any issues they may have, timeously,” the CEO concludes.
