The Huawei P40 Pro could feature its own custom photography processor

This week Huawei is going to reveal its new P40 and P40 Pro flagship phones. 26th March to be precise, but the new devices’ unveiling has taken a bit of a backseat to the chaos surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic at the moment.

While we were intrigued to see how Huawei was going to spec the P40 series in order to compete with the Samsung Galaxy S20 lineup, the bigger question now is how COVID-19 will impact the release dates, and indeed retail plan for the launch of the devices locally.

We’re yet to hear Huawei Mobile South Africa comment on that, and will likely get more insight later this week, but as is the case with new phone unveilings, some information has leaked ahead of time.

The leaked information this time around comes via Ishan Agarwal, who has a penchant for revealing specifications, features and rendered images (pictured in header) of devices before their official debut.

He has been revealing quite a bit of information about the P40 Pro in particular, which will be the more premium offering within the P40 series lineup.

To that end Agarwal is noting that a 6.58″ display is present, with Huawei dropping its usual screen notch for an oblong one which sits on the left hand side of the device. This is a similar setup to what Samsung has used for its recent Galaxy Note devices. It also looks as if the Chinese firm will utilise a curved edge for the sides of the display, minimising the amount of visible bezel in the process.

In terms of hardware, the Kirin 990 5G chipset is expected, which is no real surprise. What is of interest here is the custom photography processor that Huawei is said to be employing. This would power the rumoured 50MP primary lens, 40MP telephoto, 12MP ultra-wide and Time of Flight (ToF) array that the P40 Pro is sporting.

With Huawei being the leader as far as flagship smartphone photography is concerned in recent years, it will be interesting to see whether this dedicated chip can help push the boundaries.

As such it will be worthwhile seeing how the P40 Pro stacks up against the Galaxy S20 Ultra in the photography department.

There are only a few days left until the P40 series is unveiled via a live streamed event this week, so we won’t have to wait long to find out what the P40 Pro is packing, as well as when it is expected to arrive in South Africa.
