Microsoft will pause all optional non-security updates starting in May

With consideration of the current COVID-19 pandemic, Microsoft will pause delivery of optional, non-security updates for Windows starting in May.

In announcement on Tuesday detailed the decision it has been battling with.

“We have been evaluating the public health situation, and we understand this is impacting our customers. In response to these challenges we are prioritizing our focus on security updates, ” said the Redmond software giant.

This doesn’t mean software updates will disappear completely. Update Tuesday will still take place on the second Tuesday of every month. Updates to Office generally happen in the first week of the month and these will continue as per normal.

However, C and D updates which are generally released in the second to last and last week of the month respectively will be suspended.

These updates are generally non-security fixes for power users and IT professionals and aren’t installed automatically.

For most people then the change won’t have much of an impact.

“There is no change to the monthly security updates (B release – Update Tuesday); these will continue as planned to ensure business continuity and to keep our customers protected and productive,” wrote Microsoft.

As of time of writing there is no indication from Microsoft as to when optional non-security updates will return.
