Doom Eternal: Double the launch revenue of Doom 2016

After a hell of a long wait Doom Eternal finally launched last Friday, 20th March. Since then the game has been racking up sales, at least according to a press release we received.

“Bethesda Softworks, a ZeniMax Media company, is proud to announce the critical and commercial success of the launch of DOOM Eternal, which has quickly broken the franchise record for opening weekend sales, doubling the launch revenue of DOOM (2016),” the release reads.

Adding to this success is the fact that this game was the top selling title on Steam in this last week and managed to crack 100 000 concurrent players on the platform.

Unfortunately no details about the game’s performance on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 has been revealed at the time of writing.

Many have asked how the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has affected these numbers. With so many people either encouraged to stay inside, or required to by some lockdown, this was one of the biggest games to be released offering up something for people to do with their time.

Steam has continually broken concurrent user number records during this time too.

It’s also worth considering the (and we hate to use such a “spin’ word here) synergistic relationship here between Doom Eternal and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. These two games launched on the same day and, instead of cannibalising players from each other, the two fan bases found themselves interacting and making endless memes together.

There’s also the fact that, you know, this is an absolutely amazing game that lives up to the brilliant 2016 incarnation, and then some.

Our review of Doom Eternal will be out soon. Instead of simply reviewing the singleplayer like most other publications, we’re putting some time into the Battlemode multiplayer before rating it as a whole package. Unfortunately server errors threw a spanner into the works.

For now check out the rest of our Doom Eternal coverage, including the interesting story behind the great Daisy painting in the game.
