Huawei P40 series breaks cover, launches in April globally

This afternoon Huawei has thrown the wraps off of its brand new P40 lineup of smartphones, which it says will take mobile photography to new heights.

Stalwart of the stage and chief executive officer of the Huawei Consumer Business Group, Richard Yu revealed three new handsets during the live streamed event.

Those handsets are the P40, P40 Pro and P40 Pro+.

The handsets sport something called the quad-curve overflow display which curves the corners of the device upward. This is said to improve the feel of the P40 in your hand.

The display sports a 90Hz refresh rate across the board, along with supporting HDR and delivering a 2600×1200 resolution.

The handsets are also far more compact thanks to a narrower form factor. Despite the diet however the handsets boast sizeable batteries. The P40 features a 3 800mAh battery while the P40 Pro and Pro+ will feature a larger 4 200mAh option.

Other notable features include an in-screen fingerprint and an IP68 rating for both the P40 Pro and Pro+. The P40 carries an IP53 rating.

There are several new colours coming to the P40 range as well.

The P40 and P40 Pro will be available in Ice White, Deep Sea Blue, Black, Silver Frost, and Blush Gold. Ceramic White and Ceramic Black are reserved exclusively for the P40 Pro+.

Onward to the cameras.

Huawei has opted to shy away from the RGGB sensor used by most (if not all) manufacturers and is instead making use of an RYYB sensor.

This will reportedly allow more light to hit the sensor (though the size has a large role to play in that as well) and help give photos taken in low-light, better fidelity.

The main sensor in each of the handsets then is a 50MP 23mm RYYB sensor with OIS and an F1.9 aperture.

Things get busier the further up the range you go.

While the P40 sports a modest triple camera array, the P40 Pro cranks that up to four cameras and the P40 Pro+ goes to five cameras.

Much like Samsung, the P40 Pro+ will sport 100X zoom. Interestingly the sound will also “zoom” in when you opt to zoom in while filming a video.

Huawei also claims you will be able to not only capture stills of the Moon, but also video.

The front camera is a 32MP affair that also supports Face Unlock and smart gesture control.

Keeping things ticking along is the all new Kirin 990 5G system on chip. This SoC boasts a 23 percent improvement in CPU performance, and a 39 percent improvement in GPU performance.

The SoC also supports 5G in a variety of ways. The P40 series supports dual SIM but also has an eSIM. With this configuration users can have their main SIM support 5G, the secondary SIM or the eSIM.

There is also support for WiFi 6 thanks to the Kirin W650 chip.
