Another WACS breakage is expected to be repaired by 4th April

With South Africans currently under a 21-day lockdown bad news kept coming at the weekend when the West Africa Cable System (WACS) experienced a breakage.

The breakage was discovered between Highbridge in the UK and Seixal in Portugal at the weekend leading to poor or nonexistent connectivity for many South Africans.

The break was detected late on Friday night but the good news is that a repair ship has already been mobilised.

A repair vessel belonging to TATA (which also owns the piece of cable which broke) has already begun making its way to the breakage and has spare parts on board. The vessel will arrive at the repair site on 31st March.

The good news is that according to the TENET, the repair will be complete by Saturday 4th April.

The bad news is that this many South African internet service providers are reporting increased latency as a result of the breakage.

Afrihost at the weekend said it had managed to reroute some traffic through an alternate path but was still working on that late on Sunday evening.

With so many South Africans working from home because of the lockdown this breakage could not have come at a worse time.

We will continue to provide updates regarding the WACS breakage.
