With most of the country, as well as other parts of the globe, either practicing social distancing or on lockdown, news of Fitbit’s latest fitness-focused tracking wearable may not have reached you.
Regardless, the new Charge 4 fitness band has been revealed by the firm, which was recently acquired by Google, and much like the leaks from last week, Fitbit has kept the updates for this version relatively minimal.
That said, there are some features present in the Charge 4 that have been long asked for by users. Namely built-in GPS and up to seven days worth of battery life from the unit.
The former function will now allow users to map out their route while running, which when paired with the 24-hour heart rate monitoring and the Active Zone Minutes feature, should prove a helpful wearable for runners.
It should be noted though that battery life takes a significant dive when GPS is always-on, dropping from up to seven days to up to five hours. As such Charge 4 wearers will need to savvy about when they employ the built-in GPS on the unit.
Other features, which have also become standard on the series include water resistance up to a depth of 50 metres, goal-based exercise workouts, sleep and female health tracking, as well as the addition of Spotify control.
Having been fully revealed by Fitbit earlier today, it still remains to be seen precisely when the company aims to make the Charge 4 available to purchase in South Africa. Currently, the firm says the wearable will be available when physical and online stores re-open, but whether that’s after the lockdown or at a later date, remains to be seen.
We do know the stores that will be carrying the Charge 4 locally though, with Takealot, Sportsmans Warehouse, Cape Union Mart, Total sports, Dis-Chem, Incredible Connection, Makro, E-Bucks and FNB highlighted by Fitbit.
In terms of price, the standard Charge 4 is expected to retail for R2 999 and the Special Edition with its granite reflective/black woven band costing a recommended R3 999. Fitbit says it will also be selling Charge 4 accessories, with the being compatible with the previous generation of fitness tracker.
