Rejoice! Dark mode is now available for WhatsApp on Android and iOS

Anybody who has checked WhatsApp messages in a dark room will know the discomfort of staring at what might as well be a second Sun.

That discomfort should be a thing of the past however, now that WhatsApp has released Dark Mode for its Android and iOS apps.

The feature has been a long time coming but rather than just slap a shade of black everywhere, WhatsApp took its time and created a dark mode that’s both comfortable and reduces eye fatigue.

Speaking to The Verge, a WhatsApp spokesperson said that the firm found using pure black and white creates high contrast that increases eye fatigue.

“So instead, you’ll notice a special dark gray background and off-white color that lowers the brightness of the screen, cuts down the glare, and improves contrast and readability,” the spokesperson told The Verge.

The app developer said it also used colour and design elements to highlight important information.

The Dark Mode option should be available in the coming days as the update rolls out.

To enable dark mode on Android 10 and iOS 13 you will need to enable it in system setting. For those on Android 9 or lower head to WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Theme and select Dark.
