Everyone’s talking about Mortal Shell

A few hours ago the game Mortal Shell was announced with a short sub two minute trailer and that seems to be all anyone has been talking about online since then. So what is this indie title from a developer and publisher team we’ve never heard of?

“Mortal Shell is a ruthless and deep action-RPG that tests your sanity and resilience in a shattered world. As the remains of humanity wither and rot, zealous foes fester in the ruins. They spare no mercy, with survival demanding superior awareness, precision and instincts. Track down hidden sanctums of devout followers and discover your true purpose,” reads the game’s official description.

As you may have derived from that or the trailer (embedded below) this is very much another game inspired by FromSoftware’s stable of Souls games. This now familiar gameplay genre combined with a very compelling art style and unique world is why so many are already invested in this new property.

As for the people behind it the developer here is Cold Symmetry, a new dev team which, according to a press release, is made up of a tiny 15 person core team of ex-AAA game makers.

The publisher here is Playstack, another lesser known company. Checking out the list of games on the company’s website and the most recognisable title is probably Doctor Who: The Edge of Time.

A central mechanic to this game is where it gets its name. “Mortal Shells” are the remains of warriors which the player can occupy to change up their combat styles.

Other promised mechanics includes non-linear progression through the campaign, deep upgrade paths for your Mortal Shell(s) of choice, and a swathe of interesting enemies to fight and, presumably given the genre, get absolutely destroyed by for a while.

Mortal Shell is scheduled for a third quarter release this year on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Right now there’s a Steam page to click around for more information and to add it to your wishlist if you’re so inclined.

Those hoping to get in sooner than that may have the opportunity to participate in a limited closed beta which will be announced on a Discord server which can be accessed here. The official website for the game can also be poked and prodded for more information.
