COVID-19 in South Africa: 3rd April PM Edition

Before we begin we’d like to take a moment to explain what is happening here.

“Why is a technology news website covering COVID-19 news,” is a question we’re bound to receive so we’re going to address it right here.

Regulations published by Stella Ndabeni-Abraham states that “all internet sites operating within .zaDNA top level domain name must have a landing page with a visible link to www.sacoronavirus.co.za”.

As we fall under that regulation, we are required to link to the Department of Health’s website but we’re taking that a step further.

Every morning and every afternoon we will publish an update regarding COVID-19 in South Africa. For the purpose of these updates we will refer solely to the following sources of information:

We understand that folks are doing amazing things with data-viz and there are comments from experts that can help, but our goal with these updates is to provide you, our reader, with accurate information from trusted sources. If the source is not reliable, it will not be linked here.

We will also be placing a banner on our home page which you can click at any time to be directed to www.sacoronavirus.co.za.

Our latest update follows on below:

It is day eight of South Africa’s 21-day lockdown, with it also marking the first full week that locals have had to deal with these new regulations due to COVID-19. The lockdown is being enforced as a means of flatten the curve on the virus, but it is not having the desired effect as of yet.

This as the number of confirmed cases in the country has risen to 1 505 at the time of writing. What’s worse is that the number of fatalities in the country has risen too, with seven people having succumbed to COVID-19.

“We also want to report that there are 2 more deaths from KwaZulu-Natal. An 80-year-old male and 81-year-old female,” health minister, Zweli Mkhize, said in a briefing earlier today.

Mkhize also noted that a further two deaths are yet to be confirmed, which means the number of fatalities could be inching ever closer to the double digit mark.

As he has done in briefings and media engagements throughout the week, the minister reiterated the need for South Africans to adhere to the lockdown regulations, if the country is going to stand a chance of fighting COVID-19.

To that end, the government is investigating reports that mining companies have not been adhering to the lockdown regulations. As such mine operators are being looked at, with it being suggested that they have been forcing miners to work over fears of not getting paid.

With the 21-day lockdown not even at the halfway point, it remains to be seen for how long those in the informal sector will be able to hold out, before they have to go back to work in order to earn any form of income.

Our hopes is that government is cognisant of this, and will put measures in place to help those who do not have benefits at their place of work.
