One of the most impressive responses to the COVID-19 pandemic has been the assistance that corporates and service providers have been giving. We’ve seen numerous firms make their software free to use, as well as other organisations shift their focus to making necessary medical supplies during this time.

Not every firm is taking up the challenge, however, and Did They Help is a recently launched website aimed at showing whether or not a company or celebrity has done something to assist others.

The site also ranks companies based on their efforts, along with some brief explanations about initiatives they may have started or announced. For now there aren’t a large number of South African firms that are searchable, so it may take some time to find out about local companies.

So, if you look up Nando’s for example, it refers to the efforts that the fast food outlet has made in the UK regarding COVID-19. Still, it is interesting to see what kinds of initiatives different firms have been putting in place.

Equally interesting is the Did They Help leaderboard, which features Heroes and Zeroes. Perhaps unsurprisingly US president Donald Trump is at the top of the Zeroes leaderboard at the time of writing with a -4 rating, and American supermarket chain H-E-B number one among Heroes with a +10 rating.

You can also nominate Heroes, as well as make donations to the Patron of the site in order to keep it running. The one element missing in our opinion though, is links to sites where visitors can make contributions to organisations fighting the spread of COVID-19, but perhaps that’s still in the offing.

In any regard, the site is which is worthwhile checking out during South Africa’s current lockdown.
