Apple planning to design, manufacture and ship face shields to healthcare workers

Over the weekend, Apple CEO, Tim Cook, took to Twitter in order to explain the firm’s plan to help fight the spread of COVID-19 across the globe, and in particular assist healthcare workers who are on the front lines.

To that end Apple has secured over 20 million face shields through its supply chain and partners, Cook noted, as well as outlining the firm’s plan to design, manufacture and ship its own face shields to healthcare workers across the globe.

In said announcement (posted above), Cook said Apple had sent a number of face shields to Kaiser hospital facilities in the Santa Clara region of California, earlier this week.

The CEO adds that it is working with governments across the globe to help get face shields to those who are most in need of them. Unfortunately Cook did not go into greater detail as to which regions would be getting face shields first, but did say that the first 1 million face shields are expected to ship the week’s end.

He also provided some insight into the design of the face shields as well, which can be flat-packed and come 100 per box. They can also be assembled in less than two minutes, and are fully adjustable, the CEO added, holding up a sample in the video above.

Regardless, it is good to see companies like Apple take steps to help with the COVID-19 fight. We’ve seen technology firms in particular do their part, with some making their services and solution free to use, as well as other specialising in manufacturing shift their focus to making much-needed medical gear.
