ZACR suspends domain name deletions during lockdown

There are many services offering business owners relief during the national lockdown in South Africa from loans to grants to payment holidays.

Joining that chorus of those seeking to help businesses is the ZA Central Registry (ZACR).

The ZACR is responsible for the administration of all .ZA domains and it has announced some relief for business owners operating a website.

“We all have to play our part in beating COVID-19, which threatens our very existence. The Internet has emerged as a vital tool in helping so many people sustain their livelihoods, continue to connect with each other and pursue a myriad of online educational and recreational pursuits. We are, therefore, offering .ZA legacy domain name owners who are in arrears a respite by suspending our monthly deletions schedule,” announced chief executive officer at ZACR, Lucky Masilela.

This means that domains in arrears for non-payment of annual fees won’t be deleted during lockdown. However, deletions will start up again on the next round of deletions. This date is at present 24th April.

As the custodian of the .ZA domains – including .co.za and .net.za – the ZACR is responsible for over one million domain names.

It should come as a relief to business owners then that during lockdown they will still remain online thanks to the moves made by the ZACR.
