COVID-19 in South Africa: 7th April AM Edition

Before we begin we’d like to take a moment to explain what is happening here.

“Why is a technology news website covering COVID-19 news,” is a question we’re bound to receive so we’re going to address it right here.

Regulations published by Stella Ndabeni-Abraham states that “all internet sites operating within .zaDNA top level domain name must have a landing page with a visible link to www.sacoronavirus.co.za”.

As we fall under that regulation, we are required to link to the Department of Health’s website but we’re taking that a step further.

Every morning and every afternoon we will publish an update regarding COVID-19 in South Africa. For the purpose of these updates we will refer solely to the following sources of information:

We understand that folks are doing amazing things with data-viz and there are comments from experts that can help, but our goal with these updates is to provide you, our reader, with accurate information from trusted sources. If the source is not reliable, it will not be linked here.

We will also be placing a banner on our home page which you can click at any time to be directed to www.sacoronavirus.co.za.

Our latest update follows on below:

It is the 12th day of South Africa’s nation-wide lockdown.

As of 6th April, confirmed COVID-19 infections in South Africa sit at 1 686, an increase of 31 from Sunday’s figures.

Sadly another South African has lost their life as a result of COVID-19.

“The deceased patient is a 57 year old male from the Western Cape, who was admitted on the 5th April 2020. He had co-morbidities that included diabetes and ischaemic heart disease. We convey our condolences to the family of the deceased. We must also not forget to appreciate the health workers that treated the deceased patient,” said Dr Zweli Mkhize in a statement.

To date, the Department of Health has conducted 58 098 tests for COVID-19. Gauteng has the most positive tests for COVID-19 with the Western Cape following close behind.

Positive cases of COVID-19 in South Africa per province are outlined below.

  • Gauteng – 713

  • Free State – 89
  • Eastern Cape – 32

South African Police have this week arrested a man for spreading fake news relating to COVID-19 on Facebook.

A slice of good news for those low on supplies is that Uber Eats will now deliver essential goods. Local delivery service Bottles is also delivering groceries and essential goods from Pick n Pay, but will not be delivering alcohol as per regulations.

Looking further afield, the World Health Organisation reports that COVID-19 cases have reach 1 214 971 around the world. Sadly 67 840 deaths relating to COVID-19 have been reported to the WHO.

Africa has the least cases of COVID-19 with 6 986 confirmed cases. Conversely, Europe has reported 655 339 cases of COVID-19 while the Americas have 352 600 confirmed cases.

In order to stay up to date with the spread of COVID-19 in South Africa and abroad, we advise the following materials and platforms:
