Take a gander at the DualSense controller Sony designed for the PS5

If you have have been hold up in your home during lockdown anxiously waiting for any PlayStation 5 news, Sony just offered some respite in the form of a new controller that the next-gen console will be utilising – the DualSense.

Sony revealed the peripheral on its PlayStation blog last night, and it appears as if the company is dropping the DualShock moniker it has been used for some time now in favour of this new designation.

It might not seem like a drastic change on the surface, but given that it has been sticking with an iconic design for the past 25 years, and has not updated the DualShock 4 since 2013 in any real way, the new DualSense controller is one of the firm’s biggest departures in recent years.

So what does it feature?

For one it features haptic feedback instead of the rumbling action of the DualShock controllers. This is paired with adaptive triggers on the R2 and L2 buttons, that provide greater feedback for users, according to Sony. This means that if you are playing a game employing a bow and arrow for its combat system, for example, the longer that bow is drawn, the greater the tension is fed back into the adaptive triggers.

How that feels in-hand remains to be seen, but it’s clear that Sony is trying to make the DualSense controller as much a part of the gameplay experience as the PS5 will be.

Other changes include a USB Type-C port for charging and we’re assuming connecting to the console, as well as a more rounded design for the controller itself. How die hard DualShock fans will feel about this is unclear for now.

Another addition is a new create button. Sony says, “With Create, we’re once again pioneering new ways for players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world, or just to enjoy for themselves.”

There are no finer details about the feature at this stage, but Sony notes that more information will be shared closer to the console’s launch.

Speaking of which, the firm is still on track for the console’s launch during the 2020 holiday season, and for now, COVID-19 has not had an impact, unlike the one it has had on some of this year’s most hotly anticipated games.

“To the PlayStation community, I truly want to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we head toward PS5’s launch in Holiday 2020,” added Jim Ryan, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

For now, no pricing for the DualSense has been revealed, but it would not surprise us if the new controller is more expensive than the DualShock 4, which currently retails for roughly R899.
