Disney+ surpasses 50 million subscribers, but still no word on local availability

Disney+ recently surpassed a significant milestone, with the streaming service now amassing over 50 million subscribers. It sees the platform make a jump of roughly 22 million since the subscriber numbers it detailed approximately two months ago.

As such, Disney+’s recent rollout to other territories outside of the United States has proved a success, with lockdowns across the globe also contributing to more people consuming online content too.

Said rollout saw Disney+ land in the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, France and India, with the French launch being delayed slightly as the government were concerned about the strain the service would place on bandwidth in the country.

Either way you slice it though, Disney+ is proving to be tremendously successful, with it also surpassing one of the Disney’s other streaming platforms, Hulu, which has an estimated 30 million subscribers.

When you factor in the success of original content like The Madalorian, which has been greenlit for a second season, as well as the slew of Marvel-related TV series and movies on the way, it won’t be long before Disney+ gets close to Netflix’s 167 million subscriber mark.

Likely helping Disney+ reach that mark will be the rollout of the streaming service to regions like South Africa, which has previously seen theatrical releases of Marvel films before other parts of the world. The Disney brand is also widely popular here, and in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region, SA would no doubt prove a key territory.

For now we have to wait to hear from the company as to next phase of rollouts, and given the catalogue of Marvel content on the way, we’re hoping South Africa features heavily.
