MultiChoice partners with local footballers to donate PPE

Since lockdown began we’ve seen a number of local companies coming to the fore with donations in some form or another.

The latest company to make a sizeable donation of personal protective equipment (PPE) is MultiChoice. The broadcasting company isn’t working alone, however.

Local football clubs Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs have also answered the call for help.

Together the trio have handed over 100 000 N95 masks, 350 000 surgical masks, 100 000 gloves, 10 000 protective overalls, 10 000 wipes and 100 000 shoe covers.

Of the masks, 75 000 will be sent to the South African Police Services while 75 000 will be sent to the South African National Defence Force.

“Given the direction and guidance of the Minister, we would like to acknowledge our nurses and doctors, our men in blue and our army personnel who have been on the frontline, placing themselves at risk in the fight against the virus and saving lives whilst the rest of us are required to stay at home per government’s call to do so,” MultiChoice Group chairman, Imtiaz Patel said in a statement.

Chairpersons for the football clubs reiterated the importance of South Africans staying at home.

“I am pleased to announce that our players – from both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates – will embark on a nationwide social media public campaign in a bid to raise awareness and encourage everyone to stay at home and observe strict guidelines of personal hygiene to minimise the risk of getting infected. To ensure that our frontline workers are best served and protected, it calls on every one of us as citizens to ensure we play our part and observe government regulations to stay home,” said chairman of the Kaizer Chiefs Football Club, Kaizer Motaung.

Circling back to MultiChoice, the firm has a fund of R80 million which will service as a buffer for those in the film industry who have suffered income loss. How exactly those folks can apply to be a part of this fund is unclear.

We have fired off an inquiry to MultiChoice for more information.
