Fortnite has finally been dragged onto the Google Play Store

While rap artists and X-Men are added to Fortnite the most significant piece of news from the giant game this week is the fact that it is finally up for download on the official Google Play Store.

As a reminder the Android port of Fortnite came 18 months ago ago but was only available as an independent download on Epic Games’ own website. Why was this done? Because of money of course.

As with all online storefronts the Google Play Store demands a cut of the pie in exchange for its services. The 30 percent cut is something Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has continually moaned about over the years.

“Google puts software downloadable outside of Google Play at a disadvantage, through technical and business measures such as scary, repetitive security pop-ups for downloaded and updated software, restrictive manufacturer and carrier agreements and dealings, Google public relations characterizing third party software sources as malware, and new efforts such as Google Play Protect to outright block software obtained outside the Google Play store,” Epic Games said in a statement to Polygon.

Those “scary” measures in place are there for a good reason, however. As has been proven time and again side loading apps onto your Android device is incredibly risky.

While there is some merit to what Epic Games is saying here we can’t help but break out our smallest violin to commiserate with this giant company complaining over its inability to make even more money.

Arguments about percent cuts and walled gardens aside, you can now download Fornite directly from the Google Play Store here.

After launching a few hours ago the app currently has more than 50 000 downloads and 2 347 reviews with an overall rating of a smidge under four stars.

If you prefer not to stick to the Google Play Store for whatever reason, Epic Games has reiterated that it will continue to support the standalone Android version of the game that it already provides.
