Bungie has repeated the mistake it made with Escalation Protocol

Two years ago Bungie (still working with Activision) launched the Warmind expansion for Destiny 2.

While many loved the story and the action, I turned my back on the game shortly after Warmind released.

The reason I bring up Warmind is the public event that launched with it known as Escalation Protocol.

This horde-mode style event took place in a public space and featured seven tiers with the final tier tasking players with defeating a boss. The tiers increased in difficulty as you progressed and at launch you needed between six to nine players to complete the event comfortably.

The trouble is that players can only land on planetary patrol areas in groups of three.

These days Escalation Protocol can be done with three players but it’s a hard ask.

So why am I speaking about this now?

As part of the Season of the Worthy, Bungie (now operating independently) added a public event known as Seraph Towers.

These events see players defending a plate from enemies to spawn balls which are thrown at a central tower to progress the event.

At first these events were “easy”. The quotation marks there mean that the event was easy so long as you knew what you were doing and had a high enough power level so that enemies didn’t one-shot you.

Since Tuesday’s reset however the Seraph Towers have ramped up in difficulty and now require at the very least six players who are communicating and have their wits about them to complete the event.

We say six but a look through Reddit and Twitter reveal that nine is the magic number here.

Hmmm, sounds a bit like Escalation Protocol at launch right?

The issue we’re having right now is that as it stands, you still cannot load into a patrol space with more than three players.

Granted, there are ways to get around this but they require fireteam members load in and out of patrol spaces until they meet in an instance of the world they both occupy.

Simply put, players have to pray that they match up with five to eight other players in hopes of completing an event which is actually rather important to complete the seasonal title.

What astounds us is that players have asked Bungie to make Escalation Protocol a match-made activity for years now, and then, we get a seasonal event which ignores those calls completely.

It is just astounding that two years later Bungie has seemingly ignored the biggest issue with one of its best modes (Escalation Protocol is only shadowed by The Menagerie in my opinion) and then made the same mistake for a limited time seasonal event.

As it stands we are losing interest in Season of the Worthy quickly and Bounties: The Event Guardian Games has not helped in that regard.

This just hammers home a point we’ve been pondering since the start of this season, why were Seraph Towers not match-made from the outset? There are numerous Strikes which drop players into patrol spaces before the progress into the mission, the same could have been done for Seraph Towers and those passing through the area could simply pop in to assist if they wanted.

Asking players to jump into an area where there is no guarantee that other players will be visible was always a bad idea, and it’s starting to look like those are the only kind of idea Bungie has right now.

We’re hoping that Bungie addresses the issues plaguing the game in this week’s This Week at Bungie because if something isn’t addressed soon, players are going to stop playing a lot more than just Trials of Osiris.

Oh and just by the way, there is a secret event that takes place after a Seraph Tower event (if you manage to complete one). Who knew? Not us.
