XCOM: Chimera Squad suffers South African ratings delay on Steam

XCOM: Chimera Squad, the latest title in the rebooted franchise from Firaxis Games, launched onto Steam last week on 24th April. Those in South African who went to buy the game will come across a strange message when they visited its store page:

“Notice: This product is not currently available in your region. XCOM: Chimera Squad is not currently rated in South Africa. We’re working quickly to address this and anticipate that the game will be available in the near future,” The notice reads.

After speaking to local representatives for the game we’ve found out that this message pertains to the fact that the game had not received a rating from the Film and Publication Board of South Africa (FPB) when the international launch date rolled around.

This isn’t too surprising considering the fact that South Africa is currently under lockdown as a preventative measure against the COVID-19 pandemic.

There was also a short turn around time between the game being announced on 14th April, and its launch 10 days later. We’re not sure if that had anything to do with the ratings problem, however.

Thankfully we’ve been told that Chimera Squad’s rating has come in and South Africans are free to buy the game from Steam, which is the only place to get it right now.

At the time of writing that aforementioned notice about the rating is still present on the store page. Hopefully that’s removed in the near future to prevent any confusion for local players.

This is especially important as the game has a rather large launch discount with 50 percent of its price being lopped off for its first week. Those who pick it up before 1st May will be paying a reduced R164.50 instead of the regular localised pricing of R329.
