Free USSD service launched for those who qualify for Free Basic Electricity tokens

Back in 2003 Eskom launched Free Basic Electricity (FBE) tokens to support indigent households, and today a duo of Blue Label Telecoms subsidiaries have announced a contactless way for people to acquire those tokens.

Utilities World and Cigicell have created a free USSD service through which folks can request their FBE token.

Requesting a token is a simple five step process outlined in the image below.

To start the process simply dial *130*869#.

This USSD service is particularly valuable right now as South Africans practice physical distancing.

“We are committed to assisting all South Africans during the Covid-19 lockdown,” chief executive officer at Cigicell, Alan Kodesh, said in a statement.

“We continue to innovate and enhance our digital solutions platforms in order to improve service delivery in municipalities and to help keep people safe,” added Kodesh.

It should be noted that users check with their municipality or Eskom directly regarding qualifying criteria as neither Utilities World nor Cigicell determines who qualifies.

With that in mind, if you run into issues completing a transaction get in touch with the municipality or Eskom, and not the two Blue Label Telecoms subsidiaries.
