Yesterday Amazon Web Services (AWS) finally confirmed that its South African data centres were up and running in the country, and would serve as a hub for the Africa region as it readied to spin up another Availability Zone in Kenya later in the year.

While most of the early reaction surrounding the announcement revolved around pleas for an African Fortnite server, the more important element for large organisations and SMEs in the region will be the availability of AWS services.

At the time of the announcement, we were awaiting confirmation of what would be made available locally, and now the list of services has been updated to reflect the Cape Town region.

As such we’re now able to see what Cape Town has accessed to, compared to other regions in the EMEA area, namely Ireland, Frankfurt, London, Paris, Stockholm and Bahrain. At this stage, Cape Town has the smallest number of services, but it is still close to that offered in the Middle East.

To save you a bit of searching, we’ve listed the current range of services (44 at the time of writing) offered in the Cape Town region:

The firm has also listed pricing for on-demand services in US dollars, which you can explore here.

With the new Availability Zone now on the continent, it should be interesting to see what else AWS has planned for Cape Town and the rest of South Africa. Hopefully those details will emerge at this year’s local Summit conference, should COVID-19 and the national lockdown not have impacted it.
