Cell C zero-rates data costs for 10 local universities during lockdown, with plans to add more

In recent weeks we’ve seen a number of local carriers provide new services in a bid to assist customers struggling with data costs as a result of working or studying from home during lockdown. Cell C too has been getting in on the act, and the carrier has announced that 10 local universities will see data being zero-rated the COVID-19-related lockdown.

With connectivity being a crucial for learners and students currently, the associated costs are also proving to be a burden, so any assistance is likely welcomed.

We’ve already seen Telkom announce similar measures a couple of weeks ago, so now Cell C users can also stand to benefit.

“Cell C is playing its part to address these circumstances and ease the burden on their customers by zero-rating many information, social media and education services on their networks,” the network explains.

“Cell C has removed data costs for a number of major universities on its network to assist teachers and students with e-learning. Users can access any number of features from these sites including registration for courses, past papers, learning tools and – in some instances – information about the COVID-19 virus and the government’s efforts to contain it,” it added in a press release sent to Hypertext.

As for the aforementioned tertiary institutions, the following 10 have been listed:

  • The University of Cape Town
  • The University of Johannesburg
  • The University of the Witwatersrand
  • The University of the Western Cape
  • Stellenbosch University
  • Nelson Mandela University
  • Rhodes University
  • Mangosuthu University of Technology
  • Walter Sisulu University
  • The University of Venda

The carrier also says this list will be updated, so hopefully more institutions will receive the same zero-rated treatment.

Along with the recent zero-rated announcement, Cell C has previously made certain news and social media platforms freely available to consumers via its Free Basics/Internet/org services.

“As a proudly South African company, Cell C is glad to be able to do our part in helping South Africans during this difficult time,” adds executive head of marketing, Hazel Chimhandamba.

“We hope our efforts encourage our customers to stay safe, connected and informed,” she concludes.
