Spotify Family Plans now available in SA with up to 6 members

Ask any South African Spotify user, or rather the one responsible for paying the monthly subscription fee what feature they most want, and they’ll usually give you the same answer – making Spotify Family Plans available locally.

The much-requested feature is now available to South African users, with the music streaming service launching its Premium Spotify Family Plans today. The plan will cater for up to six family members living under the same roof at a bundled rate of R99.99/R109.99.

The R109.99 price is for direct carrier billing where available, for those who wish to pay via airtime on their local network for R10 extra.

The launching of the Plan during the country’s levelled-lockdown is no mistake either, with the streaming platform acutely aware that families are spending more time than ever together at the moment.

“Since Spotify was first introduced locally, it has been exploring ways to introduce new content, features and plans to add value to its users and while the rollout comes during a difficult climate, Spotify hopes families will find the new plan useful, especially while many parents and children are home,” the firm explained in a press release shared with Hypertext.

Along with the Family Plans, the platform is adding three specific features:

  • Family Mix: Families can enjoy exclusive access to a personalised playlist packed with songs the whole family enjoys. Family Mix is updated regularly, and you can control who is in each session to optimise your family’s favourite shared listening moments.
  • Parental Controls: Parents will also be able to control the Explicit Content Filter setting of all other accounts on their plan.
  • Family Hub: Billing users can manage their Family’s settings in one place, including adding or removing family members, keeping your home address up to date, and adjusting your parental controls.”

If you’re an existing Spotify Premium subscriber, users can make the switch to the Family Plan by visiting their account page and selecting their subscription to change it. Added to this, those newcomers to Spotify who have not tried Premium before, will be able to get the first month on the Family Plan for free.

With Spotify having already experienced a strong quarter during COVID-19, and a significant increase in its number of users and hours of listening, it should be interesting to see how the addition of Family Plans across the Middle East and Africa are affected moving forward.
