All devs welcome as Apple confirms virtual WWDC starting 22nd June

Ever since MWC was cancelled over COVID-19 fears and the virus’ spread reached pandemic levels, a number of high-profile tech events have either been called off, postponed or become virtual. For this year’s WWDC developer’s conference, Apple opted to go the virtual route, confirming that it will be free to attend for all devs.

The Cupertino-based firm revealed the format earlier this week, along with announcing that it will run from 22nd June.

Added to this, Apple is making access to its Developer app free too, as well as introducing a new event for budding coders called the Swift Student Challenge.

As you can tell from the name it is aimed at learners studying coding in some way, shape or form, with the Swift application serving as the platform for the event.

“Now in its 31st year, WWDC20 will be an opportunity for millions of creative and innovative developers around the world to get early access to the future of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS, and to learn from Apple engineers as they work to build app experiences that enrich the lives of Apple customers around the globe,” the firm noted in a press release regarding the announcement.

“WWDC20 will be our biggest yet, bringing together our global developer community of more than 23 million in an unprecedented way for a week in June to learn about the future of Apple platforms,” adds Phil Schiller, Apple’s SVP of worldwide marketing.

For now it remains to be seen how the logistics of the event will be handled, especially given the amount of attendees that will now be wanting to experience things virtually.

For now though, more and more firms are turning to virtual platforms in order to keep their events alive, and continue to communicate with their respective communities.
