‘What if the Nintendo Switch home screen looked like this’ sweeps Twitter

Since its launch back in 2017 the Nintendo Switch has been rightfully criticised for a lacklustre UI and a swathe of missing features in its OS. Fans have now taken to Twitter to riff on this fact, especially bringing attention to the bare bones home screen of the console.

While there’s no hashtag to connect the hundreds (if not thousands) of tweets, they all share the same format: the text “What if the Nintendo Switch home screen looked like this” accompanied by an image.

This image is usually the original home screen edited in some way, a screenshot of a different machine’s home screen, an unrelated image, some kind of nonsensical inclusion or a combination of all of that.

Yes we’re a bit miffed that the phrase isn’t accompanied by a colon or question mark to make it more coherent, but we have enjoyed the silliness that the community has put out so far.

Right now we’ve only seen these tweets springing up over the last few hours, so we’re looking at the ground floor of a new meme should it take off in the coming days.

That said this kind of tweet and joke may have been happening for some time now, but it’s only recently that it has appeared often enough to trend a bit and show up on Twitter’s Explore page.

We’ve embedded a few examples below so you don’t need to trawl through Twitter to find them. Our favourite of the bunch is also the most subtle, which is just the actual Nintendo Switch home page but with the “light mode” basic white theme instead of the “dark mode” basic black theme.

Putting aside the fact that only true degenerates use basic white, it’s hilarious that Themes were rumoured to be a massive part of Nintendo Switch customisation, and all we have three years later is two choices in plain white or plain black.
