Lenovo expands AMD Epyc server portfolio with two new units

The Lenovo Data Centre Group has today announced the launch of two ThinkSystem servers which won’t be sporting Intel, but rather AMD CPUs.

The ThinkSystem SR645 and SR665 two-socket servers will both be powered by AMD’s Epyc 7002 processors.

This expands on the ThinkSystem SR635 and SR655 single-socket servers launched in 2019 pictured above.

While Lenovo doesn’t explicitly state why it opted to go with Team Red over Team Blue, the fact that AMD’s chips support PCIe 4.0 might have something to do with it.

“The new Lenovo ThinkSystem two-socket servers tap into the power of our 2nd Gen AMD EPYC processors to make a meaningful impact in the areas where performance, space and efficiency are critical to business outcomes,” senior vice president and general manager, server business unit at AMD, Dan McNamara, said in a statement.

Regardless of the reasoning though, the new servers have been designed to meet the processing power needs of the financial services, retail and manufacturing sectors.

“Our new Lenovo ThinkSystem servers are designed for workloads such as in-memory databases, advanced analytics, virtualisation, and AI,” Vice President and General Manager of Server, Storage and Software Defined Infrastructure at Lenovo Data Centre Group, Kamran Amini, said in a statement.

The ThinkSystem SR645 and SR665 boast support for PCIe 4 and up to eight 75W NVIDIA T4s GPUs. In terms of onboard storage the servers can house 40 2.5 inch drives or up to 32NVMe drives.

Lenovo highlights that its new servers reduce the total cost of ownership by as much as 46 percent.
