Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 768G 5G is made for mid-range gaming smartphones

In 2020 Qualcomm looks to be making a big push when it comes to silicon that supports 5G. We’ve already seen what the firm has on the flagship side of things, and now we’re seeing more mid-range-focused chipsets come to the fore.

The latest is the Snapdragon 768G 5G, and as Qualcomm explains, it is designed for smartphones that serve up an above average mobile gaming experience.

To that end an improved Kyro 475 CPU is tasked with handling the heavy processing for this chipset, with the firm claiming a clock speed of 2.8GHz, which is up from the 2.4GHz on the older 765G model. Added to this is an Adreno 620 GPU which yields 15 percent better graphics performance and rendering compared to the aforementioned processor.

When you factor in the support for 5G, which features a peak download speed of 3.7Gbps according to Qualcomm, the new Snapdragon 768G 5G is well equipped for those manufacturers aiming to make a solid performing mobile gaming smartphone at a more reasonable price point.

As for when we’ll be able to experience the performance of the chipset, for some the wait won’t be long at all, with the recently announced Xiaomi Redmi K30 5G Racing Edition already sporting the offering. The device costs an estimated $282 (~R5 141) in its native China, but no word on when it will be available in other regions.

As more firms look to bring 5G and mobile gaming to their mid-range devices in 2020, we should be seeing more of the Snapdragon 768G 5G in the latter half of the year.
