Cisco Networking Academy to offer free instructor training until mid-June

As more South Africans are embracing the new normal that is remote working under COVID-19 phased lockdown, there is still a need to upskill and potentially learn where possible. To that end the Cisco Networking Academy has confirmed that it will be offering free remote instructor training.

The training would normally cost between $500 to $1000 to complete, according to the firm. The Academy also confirmed that this free offering is being made available to those interested on the African continent, starting this week and lasting until 15th June.

“The rising global demand for skilled technology professionals calls for the development of foundational digital and entrepreneurial skills of students, in order to fuel an inclusive digital economy for Africa,” explained the firm in a press release sent to Hypertext.

“This free remote instructor training is an opportunity for educators to bridge the digital divide and build a more inclusive future for all. When it comes to technology adoption, South Africa was ranked 56th in the world. This highlights major improvement needed in order to successfully become key players in 4IR as this demands the acceleration of digital products and services,” it adds. 

This latest initiative comes under Cisco’s renewed focus on education within the IT sector, with the next wave of jobs in the industry needing workers who are properly trained and skilled, in order to deliver.

“Due to the current pandemic, schooling came to sudden a halt, however, with the means and technological resources available to move Africa forward, learning and the building of futures must continue,” notes Alfie Hamid, regional manager for Africa at the Cisco Networking Academy.

“As a commitment to empowering education, for the move to a virtual learning classroom environment, Cisco has offered free meeting tools and information to get your virtual classroom up and running,” he adds.

The certification forms part of Cisco’s career building programs, with the firm noting that the Networking Academy is the longest-running educational program of its kind, offering courses including networking, programmable infrastructure, and cybersecurity.

“In a recent survey, 97.2% of educators reported their involvement improved their teaching and professional growth and 85.2% said the program helped broaden their career,” concludes Hamid.
