COVID-19 in South Africa: 13th May

Before we begin we’d like to take a moment to explain what is happening here.

“Why is a technology news website covering COVID-19 news,” is a question we’re bound to receive so we’re going to address it right here.

Regulations published by Stella Ndabeni-Abraham states that “all internet sites operating within .zaDNA top level domain name must have a landing page with a visible link to www.sacoronavirus.co.za”.

As we fall under that regulation, we are required to link to the Department of Health’s website but we’re taking that a step further.

Every morning and every afternoon we will publish an update regarding COVID-19 in South Africa. For the purpose of these updates we will refer solely to the following sources of information:

We understand that folks are doing amazing things with data-viz and there are comments from experts that can help, but our goal with these updates is to provide you, our reader, with accurate information from trusted sources. If the source is not reliable, it will not be linked here.

We will also be placing a banner on our home page which you can click at any time to be directed to www.sacoronavirus.co.za.

Our latest update follows on below:

As we enter deeper into South Africa’s phased lockdown, so does the confusion as to what is and is not allowed during this time. Confusion aside, the NDoH has provided us with the latest local statistics when it comes to COVID-19.

To that end the number of positive cases in the country has increased to 11 350, with the number of deaths thankfully staying where they were earlier in the week at 206.

As was the case when South Africa moved out of Lockdown level five on 1st May, it is the Western Cape which has seen the highest number of new cases among all of the provinces, which begs the question as to why people in the region continue to flout government’s regulations.

At the time of writing, the Western Cape has seen an increase of 484 cases since the last statistics were revealed. The Eastern Cape has also seen a sharp rise in new cases, with 148 being recorded.

As for the entire country, the current breakdown of confirmed cases per province is as follows:

  • Western Cape – 6 105
  • Gauteng – 2 014
  • Eastern Cape – 1 504
  • KwaZulu-Natal – 1 394
  • Free State  – 135
  • Mpumalanga – 63
  • Limpopo – 54
  • North West – 51
  • Northern Cape – 30
