The New Mutants is making yet another run at a theatrical release

In what could be considered today’s uplifting news the absolutely cursed movie The New Mutants has again been given a new release date. More than that, however, is the decision that the film will still be released in theatres instead of simply being put on a streaming platform due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The official Twitter account for The New Mutants posted again after a hiatus. The account had not been active since March of this year.

The tweet is embedded below and contains a new edit of an existing poster for the movie, albeit with a new theatrical release date of 28th August 2020. Yip, still in 2020.

If you’re new to the, well, New Mutants saga, this may not seem like a big deal. Just another movie being moved around because of COVID-19, right?

The troubles with this movie started long before the pandemic. This movie was filmed back in 2017 and planned to be released in 2018. This was then delayed by planned reshoots, Disney taking over Fox and, most recently, the coronavirus. It’s become a bit of a recurring joke that every time the film is about to be released some new delay pushes it back again.

As to why a theatrical release has been chosen over streaming the rumour is that some legal obligations require it to be released in this way.

Putting all that aside people that are still looking forward to the movie – or those just wanting to see it for a bit of a joke after all the delays – will need to sit tight and wait a few more months. You know, if nothing pushes the date back again.

There we go, we went the whole story without making an “old mutants” joke.
