LEGO’s Journey to the West sets get priced in South Africa

Last week LEGO revealed Monkie Kid, a new range of buildable sets which will be a reimagining of the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West.

While the first wave of products, made up of eight sets, have generally been received well, they are all rather pricey.

With the rand not being too strong in the last month or so many were worried that these sets would be even more expensive once they reached our shores.

We can now compare our local pricing to other countries thanks to the Official LEGO Stores online site being updated with pre-orders for Monkie Kid products.

The full list of sets, their prices and the store links for each are available below.

So how did we do in terms of the exchange? Let’s look at the cheapest and the most expensive sets for points of comparison.

80006: White Dragon Horse Bike costs £24.99 / $34.99 / €29.99. At the time of writing that converts to ~R561 / ~R642 / ~R599 respectively. In South Africa the local pricing is R549.99, so we’re getting a decent deal here as the RRP is lower than international markets if you had to do a direct conversion.

At the other end of the scale is 80013: Monkie Kid’s Team Secret HQ. Overseas this will cost £159.99 / $169.99 / €169.99, converting to ~R3 597 / ~R3 121 / ~R3 395 respectively. Again the local pricing is much more favourable at R2 799.99.

While none of these toys are cheap, a product of even the smallest one still being large in terms of the amount of pieces, it is really nice to see that they’re not exorbitantly priced in our country. Hopefully none of those prices go up before the “early June” release.
