It’s actually happening: the Snyder Cut of Justice league is coming 2021

If this year just couldn’t get any more unpredictable it was just announced that Warner Bros. Pictures and HBO Max has teamed up to release the Snyder Cut of 2017’s Justice League onto the latter’s streaming platform next year.

To sum up as fast as possible: Justice League was a bit of a disaster that still managed to garner a strong following. News then came out slowly over the years that a mythical “Snyder Cut” by director Zach Snyder existed somewhere. This cut was apparently the real vision of the director, free from studio interference, limited movie run times and other debacles like Henry Cavil’s CGI facial hair removal.

All this time many doubted such a version of the movie existed but fans went ahead with the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut hashtag on just about every website on the internet. After all that campaigning and endless arguments about this movie, it is finally happening.

“#ReleaseTheSnyderCut first became a passionate rallying social media cry among fans in 2017 and has not let up. From countless press articles and hundreds of thousands of social media mentions, it became a powerful global movement among cinephiles and comic book fans,” Reads the announcement.

An image released with the announcement. It’s an old piece of marketing material with a black and white filter as well as some text.

That announcement doesn’t give up any details on what the Snyder Cut will entail, but there are rumours that this new version of Justice League could be a massive four hour endeavour or a six chapter TV style release.

The Hollywood Reporter, usually a solid name in the movie rumour industry, has added that this new cut of the movie is hoovering up between $20 and $30 million dollars.

Despite being supremely expensive to make (pegged in the $300 million range) Justice League is still considered to be a success overall. Will spending this extra money and releasing it on a streaming platform be profitable? We’ll just have to wait until next year to find out.

Hopefully in the intervening time HBO Max will be made available in more countries. Many who visit its site are met with the familiar “not available in your region” message.

“I want to thank HBO Max and Warner Brothers for this brave gesture of supporting artists and allowing their true visions to be realized. Also a special thank you to all of those involved in the SnyderCut movement for making this a reality,” Snyder adds to the announcement.
