Twitter is testing a feature that lets you lock trolls out of conversations

Conversations on Twitter can help breed new friendships or lead to a fierce debate but sometimes responses can be nothing but a troll trying to derail the conversation.

With that in mind, Twitter is currently testing a feature where users can limit who is able to respond to a conversation.

Users are presented with three options for who can respond to a tweet:

  • Everyone
  • People you follow
  • Only people you mention

These options are reminiscent of those presented to Facebook users regarding how content they post is shared on the platform. The difference here, however, is that all Twitter users will still be able to see and like the Tweets.

“Tweets with the latter two settings will be labeled and the reply icon will be grayed out so that it’s clear for people if they can’t reply. People who can’t reply will still be able to view, Retweet, Retweet with Comment, and like these Tweets,” explains Twitter’s director of product management, Suzanna Xie.

The feature is currently being tested among a small group of people across platforms including iOS, Android and the Twitter website.

Should this feature make it out of testing, we think it might be a better alternative to hiding replies, a feature introduced earlier this year.

Of course, we foresee folks crying fowl because they’ve been effectively locked out of conversations by users. To that we’d say folks have a right to converse with each other and not have to field responses from every Tom, Dick and Harry with a soapbox.

This feature has been a long time coming and we’re looking forward to being able to have more controlled engagements over on Twitter.
