Pre-orders for Sony’s cinematography-focused Xperia 1 II start 1st June Stateside

Given all the chaos that has been 2020, you may have been forgiven for forgetting about the flagship phone that Sony unveiled at the beginning of the year – the Xperia 1 II. This cinematography-focused device takes a lot of inspiration from the Japanese company’s Alpha series of cameras, and now those in the States have pricing and a pre-order date for this latest flagship phone.

Going up for pre-order on 1st June, the Xperia 1 II (we’re still now sure how to pronounce its name) will cost a recommended $1 199 (~R21 209) in the States, before shipping on 28th June.

Sony is sweetening the deal by bundling the company’s WF-1000XM3 noise-cancelling wireless earphones too, but there is no mention of whether a similar offer will be made for those outside the US when the Xperia 1 II becomes available.

So what does $1 200 buy you?

Well the flagship device is not shy when it comes to specifications and features. It supports 5G for one, which is becoming increasingly important in 2020, along with a 6.5″ (21:9) 4K HDR display.

There’s also an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor doing the heavy lifting, as well as 8GB RAM and 256GB onboard storage. Sony has decided to give this device a 4 000mAh battery, dual SIM design, Hi-Res audio functionality and Bluetooth 5.1.

The real star of the show is the camera setup, and in particular the triple lens offering on the rear. This rectangular housing features a trio of 12MP lenses, each serving up different focal lengths and apertures to yield a better overall shooting performance, according to Sony.

Added to this is a number of cinematography modes and filters, and the Xperia 1 II  is clearly designed with content creators that have deep pockets in mind.

For now, there is no word on when or indeed if the Xperia 1 II is headed to South Africa, but if Sony wanted to reinvigorate interest in its mobile brand, a powerful flagship phone with equally impressive photography might do the trick. Provided the price is right.

Details on both the pricing and availability fronts will be shared with our readers as soon as Sony Mobile South Africa chooses to confirm the Xperia 1 II’s local status.
