Nitrome starts converting its Flash catalogue to HTML5

Developer Nitrome, better known in recent years for its mobile games and the upcoming Shovel Knight Dig, has a rather large library of beloved Flash games which are now in danger of being lost to time as most browsers kill off support.

To stop that happening Nitrome has started working with developer Poki. The pair are working to bring the Nitrome catalogue of more than 130 games to HTML5 so that people can keep playing them into the future.

“Time to talk a little more about the HTML5 versions. They are not ports! The games are running off the exact code of the original games pulled directly from the original flash files. What the wizards making this happen have made is more comparable to an emulator…a Nitrome emulator…eek! Being an emulator of sorts some people may see performance differences to these versions but the code is highly optimised and will improve even further as the team continue to work on it,” Nitrome notes in the announcement.

The first game to get this treatment is Bad Ice Cream which is available right here. Right now it is the only title in a new section on the developer’s website dedicated to the HTML5 games.

The new versions of these games are also made to work well on mobile browsers with control overlays being tailor made for each title. An Easter Egg is also promised for those who look hard enough.

No timeline has been given for the rest of the Flash games to make the transition, but the developer does recommend joining its Discord for news like that.
