BlizzCon 2020 cancelled. Some online component is planned for 2021

As the COVID-19 pandemic shows no sign of stopping, most planned large gatherings for 2020 have been cancelled. The latest to share this fate is BlizzCon, which has just been officially canned this year.

In an announcement on the official Blizzard site, Saralyn Smith, executive producer of BlizzCon, spoke to the community about why this decision was made.

“Several weeks ago, I shared an update about our uncertainty around holding BlizzCon this year. Since then, a lot has changed . . . and a lot also hasn’t changed. During this time, we’ve had many discussions about what holding a convention could look like in light of all the health and safety considerations we’d want to make. We’ve also talked about different paths we could take, and how each one could be complicated by fluctuations in national and local health guidelines in the months ahead. Ultimately, after considering our options, we’ve come to the very difficult decision to not have BlizzCon this year,” Smith writes.

As expected with events of this type the organisers are looking into how it can be moved online to salvage what has already been planned and give the community something to look forward to.

In that regard BlizzCon is no different, with Smith also talking about some online component for the event. What’s different here is that this will not take place this year.

“We’d want to do this as soon as we could, but given that this is new-ish territory and the different factors involved, it will most likely be sometime early next year,” Smith adds.

Right now, then, there just won’t be any BlizzCon at all in 2020.
