Sony reveals ZV-1 as its purpose-built vlogging camera

Earlier this month, Sony teased a new compact camera that it was getting ready to unveil. At the time only the silhouette of the device was known, along with a name – the ZV-1.

The official specifications of the compact camera were also unconfirmed at the time, but it was generally believed that the device would be made with content creators in mind, and vloggers in particular.

Now the device has been officially revealed, and as anticipated, it is indeed a camera that vloggers will be interested in.

As Engadget points out, the Sony ZV-1 borrows and integrates a few elements from the Japanese firm’s other popular and powerful compact cameras. Most notably the RX100V and RX100VII.

In terms of specifications a 20MP 1inch sensor is present, which has been paired in this particular setup with a 24-70mm f/1.8-2.8 lens. Added to this is the ability to shoot in up to 4K at 30fps. There’s also the ability to record video on 1080p at 120fps, should 4K not be what you’re after.

There are also a few other vlogger-focused features to the ZV-1, such a flip out camera that you can see in the header image above. The screen can be orientated to face users when they’ve got the camera set up to shoot in a “selfie” mode, along with have touch-enabled focus built into the display.

Unfortunately the touch-enabled feature does not extend to menu navigation, but the ability to change the focal point without having to switch up how you’re holding the camera should prove useful.

The record button has also been placed atop the ZV-1 to make it easier to reach while vlogging, and Sony has added real-time autofocus and eye tracking to the unit, which too should prove handy for vloggers and other content creators.

Another element that should come in handy is the 3-capsule microphone built into the compact camera, which Sony says is capable of delivering better audio recording than that of a DSLR or mirrorless camera.

So how much will it cost you? The Sony ZV-1 is set to go on sale in select regions for $799 (~R14 008), and ship on 11th June. Locally we have not seen the compact vlogging camera appear for pre-order online at any photography stores as of yet, but details on that front are sure to be forthcoming.
