Instagram Lite pulled as a massive redesign is in the works

Instagram Lite is not accessible at the moment, with it currently being pulled from app stores as a massive redesign is in the works. In the interim, those who made use of the Lite version of the social media platform have been asked to move to the fully fledged version on mobile or desktop, with no precise timeframe given for when the redesign will rollout to the public.

Given that many people use Instagram Lite as it is less bandwidth and data hungry than Instagram proper, it remains to be seen how many people will make the move, and for how long they can afford to.

“We are rolling back the test of the Instagram Lite app. You can start using the latest version of Instagram instead to connect with the people and things you love,” a spokesperson told TechCrunch.

At this stage, that’s all the information that Instagram was willing to share at this stage. It is interesting though, to hear the company continue to refer to the Lite app as a test, which could mean when the redesigned version hits the market, it could very well be larger in file size and more data intensive than it was previously.

Much of this is conjecture at this point, but seeing as how Instagram Lite is aimed at emerging markets, and given the usual high cost of data in those regions, removing the app’s availability amid the current COVID-19 pandemic does strike us as a tad odd.

For now Facebook Lite, which shares a parent company with Instagram Lite is available, but now more than ever, people need applications that keep them connected, while not breaking the bank.

Hopefully Instagram Lite makes a swift return, as these less data-intensive apps have proved popular in emerging markets.
