Timelie Review – In the nick of time

Ever wanted to control time and re-do something over? Well now you can in Timelie. Timelie is an indie puzzle game published and developed by Urnique Studio in collaboration with Milk Bottle Studio

Players in Timelie will take control of a girl that awakens in a mysterious facility and has to escape or meet her untimely demise at the hands of robots. Timelie is at its core an excellent puzzle game and one that should not be overlooked.

Rewind

As a stealth puzzle game, Timelie makes use of some rather simple mechanics. Players will control a girl by moving her around on a grid-like surface environment. Each move you make is tracked by the timebar at the bottom of the screen. More moves, more time passes. Timelie gradually introduces more gameplay mechanics to you and before you know it, the game will have you solving puzzles involving significant time manipulation.

Being able to rewind time is one of the key aspects to solving puzzles in Timelie. For example, if you move forward too fast and get spotted by a robot, it’s not the end for you. You can simply rewind time and then try something else.

Fast Forward

Being able to rewind time isn’t your only ability though. Players will be able to pick up cubes which allow them to perform timeline manipulation to repair broken paths. Players will also be able to fast forward time to observe enemy patterns in a level before choosing their own path through the level.

There’s plenty of puzzle solving on offer in Timelie and the game never lets itself stagnate or get boring. Each level is visually appealing and the visual effects of timeline manipulation are quite frankly gorgeous. Seeing a broken bridge get pieced back together never gets old.

Pause

Timelie’s puzzles get progressively more challenging the further you get into the game. The game introduces a cat to you quite early and this further complicates matters. Using the cat, players will be able to trigger distractions and evade robots. In other levels, players will have to save the cat by building a pathway for it to traverse before the timeline collapses.

Thankfully the difficulty and learning curve is just right throughout the game and there’s never frustration involved. Levels provide the right amount of challenge and there are quite a few that will really make you think about how to get to the end. Hacking different consoles, opening the right doors, diverting enemies away, all of this comes together to create a masterful puzzle solving adventure. “Failure”, and we use that term lightly, is a key aspect in the game since it heavily relies on the rewind mechanics and it’s one that is used perfectly throughout.

Each level in Timelie can therefore be seen as a learning experience as you pause and reflect on your actions. What happens if you divert a robot to a different room? Will the girl be able to escape if you don’t close a door in time? Therein lies the beauty of the game.

Final Verdict

Overall Timelie is an indie game that’s excellent in all aspects. The game makes use of a great soundtrack, gorgeous visual elements and simple stealth gameplay mechanics with the added twist of simple time manipulation.

It’s over in about four hours or so and delivers incredibly satisfying puzzle solving gameplay throughout. The story might not be gripping since it’s quite vague, however, the gameplay mechanics sure are. At its current price on Steam right now, we highly recommend Timelie.
