Life Healthcare hit by cyberattack on IT systems

Life Healthcare Group has revealed that it has become the target of a criminal attack on its IT systems.

The firm confirmed this via a news post on its website, but as of time of writing it’s unclear the extent to which sensitive data has been compromised.

“First, and foremost, we wish to assure all the communities within which we operate, that this criminal attack on our systems will not affect the quality care and clinical excellence we aim to provide. Patient care remains our key priority,” acting group chief executive officer at Life Healthcare, Pieter Van der Westhuizen said in a statement.

As a result of the attack, Life Healthcare’s admission systems, business processing systems and email servers have been taken offline. This was done as a precautionary measure to stem the attack and conduct investigations.

The healthcare provider says that patient care has not been impacted by the attack.

The firm goes on to say that cybersecurity experts as well as a forensic team have been brought onboard to investigate the matter.

“We are deeply disappointed and saddened that criminals would attack our facilities during such a time, when we are all working tirelessly and collectively to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. However, we will not be distracted, and will continue to place our patients first. We regret that the disruption caused by this criminal act may cause our patients some frustration, in what is already a trying time.,” said Van der Westhuizen.

As of time of writing it is unclear who is behind the attack or indeed what attack vector was used.

While it’s still early days in understanding this attack, Life has pointed its customers to this Q&A to answer some questions they may have.

Life Healthcare says it’s working around the clock to restore its systems.
