Need for Speed double header: crossplay and a new Criterion game

It’s an exciting day for Need for Speed fans as the latest game in the franchise – Heat – gets crossplay, and developer Criterion Games announces work on a new title.

Crossplay comes as a part of the June update which should be live today. This will be released first on Xbox One, then PlayStation 4 and finally PC, so if you’re trying to get in early one one platform you may need to wait a while.

Crossplay is an opt-in feature which can be activated through the game’s menu in the privacy settings.

“You can search for friends in the Find Players menu. Head over to the Party Menu and check the new EA Friends tab to see who’s online across all platforms. In order to create a party and invite them to your game, they naturally need to opt-in for cross-play as well. In the game, you will see icons next to players’ names, indicating which platform they’re playing on, and you can use the proximity voice chat to talk to them,” reads the relevant part of the patch notes.

The rest of those patch notes are rather lengthy but they all seem to fall into the realm of general bug fixes and quality of life improvements.

Need for Speed Heat launched late last year to a relatively positive reception (you can read our review here)  and we now know what’s in store for the future of the franchise.

Criterion Games general manager Matt Webster wrote up a post on EA’s website announcing that the developer would be making the next game in the series.

Unfortunately there’s little information about this new game other than Webster stating that “We’re focused on bringing Criterion’s unique point of view, unparalleled game feel, and high quality innovations”.

With so many online events coming up to announce new titles we may see more of this mystery game soon.
